Reverse engineering with Geomagic Design X

Reverse engineering is an increasingly popular technique in industry. The process involves measuring and analysing a physical object without the original drawings and documents, and reconstructing and reproducing it using a CNC machine or 3D printer. For reverse engineering, there is an efficient 3D software – Geomagic Design X.

DATA CAPTURE - HELP WITH 3D SCANNING TECHNOLOGY

A necessary step before reverse engineering is the use of a 3D scanner to obtain the most accurate 3D data of the object. In this case, Shining3D FreeScan UE Pro was used. It is a handheld 3D laser scanner with a metrological accuracy of up to 0.02 mm. The 3D data of the object was well represented in the cross-laser line scanning mode. The data is then processed and converted into an STL file.

ALIGNMENT IN 3D GEOMAGIC DESIGN X

The next step is to import the scanned data into Geomagic Design X 3D software. With the “Auto Segment” function, which can classify data into different geometric colour classes based on curvature and features. These classes can be used to create reference functions such as planes, curves and points. In this case, we create planes with the “Plane” function and use the “Alignment function”.

MODELLING

Once the data is aligned, the modelling process can begin. The aim of reverse engineering is to create a model that resembles a 3D scanned object, using advanced and convenient features. The “Mesh sketch” function is used to sketch the outline of the cross-section. In this step there is a hint to hide the 3D scanned data by clicking “Ctrl+1”. Then use the “Line” and “Perimeter circle” functions to draw a sketch based on this outline, and then the “Trim” function to remove unnecessary data. The final solid body is created using the “Extrude” function.
